Ilulissat Winter 2016/17 from Reykjavik
Ilulissat - A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Ilulissat means "icebergs" and when visiting Ilulissat everyone will understand why the town was named so: Enormous icebergs are stranded just outside the town all year round coming from the Ilulissat Glacier. The most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere with a yearly production of 35 km3 of ice. The glacier and the icefjord have been at the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2004. Ilulissat is also known as the town of huskies. Even being a modern arctic town offering all facilities, the huskies and the dogsleds are still common transportation when travelling or hunting.
The Northern Lights - a free bonus in the sky
The northern lights add an extra bonus to the winter guests as they will not be charged for this amazing experience and it is never sold out. All it takes is a clear sky in dark surroundings with as little lightpollution possible - and the proper outfit. Northern lights are a part of Greenland´s characteristica and fill up the night with myths and magic and clear and frosty winter adventures.
Huskies & Icebergs
When visiting Ilulissat one can choose simply to experience the amazing surroundings on their own or attend in one of our many exciting excursions. By boat among the huge icebergs and to the calving glacier, visiting a hunters´ village, go by dogsled into the wilderness and much more. Please click here for inspiration.
