Ilulissat City Walk

A guided city sightseeing with introduction to Ilulissat and the everyday life,  the town´s history and the culture along with Greenland´s history in general. We  pay visits to the historic part of the town with buildings dating back to the start of the Danish trading station, to the fishermen at the harbour and to  their trading post “Brædtet”. We also  learn about administration and politics in the modern Greenland. At the Knud Rasmussen you will find an interesting excibition as well as a traditional Greenlandic turfhouse. 

Home Visit / "Kaffemik"

"Kaffe-mik" is the  Greenlandic way of  celebrating  birthdays, weddings,  confirmations,  "the first thing of everything celebrations" or just greeting visitors.  We work  with some local families in the town that happily open their private home and arrange this traditional "Kaffe-mik". Please remember that it is a costume to take off the shoes when going indoor.

Sermermiut, UNESCO Heritage

By bus to the old Heliport and further on by foot to the beautiful Sermermiut Valley with amazing views of the icefjord and the gigantic icebergs.  We pass the ruins of Inuit dwellings and the guide tells about the different Inuit cultures that first settled in this valley for more than 4000 years ago. This is an easy hike and we rest at view point where warm drink will be served.

Eqi - the Calving Glacier / summer only

By boat to the Eqi glacier north of Ilulissat -  one of the few glaciers  in this area where one is  able  cruise close to the glacier and experience  the sights and sounds when the glacier calves with thunderlike noices and a new iceberg brakes off and drifts into the fjord. We enjoy our lunch on board the boat   while the crew tells about the glaciers, the icebergs and the Inland Ice Cap.

Hunters Village by Boat

We sail by boat - passing gigantic icebergs - to a small isolated village with no road connection to the outside world. In the village we experience the "old Greenland" where local population is mainly depending upon fishing and hunting. Homevist and lunch is with a local family in the village before cruising back to Ilulisat.

Iceberg Cruise day / Midnight Cruise

The Ilulissat Glacier is the most productive glacier in the Northern hemisphere which  results in gigantic  icebergs raising up to 80 m.  above sea level. We cruise  as close to the icebergs as possible while the the  staff tells about the ice.  For groups we can arrange drinks cooled by this thousands of years old ice. This tour is offered as midnight cruise in June and July and as a sun set cruise in spring and autumn.

Whale Watching Safari - summer only

Every Summer the whales go into the Disko Bay to feed between the icebergs - a sight beyond imagination. We do only operate the Whale Watching Safaries when we almost certain that the whales are in the area. Humpback and finwhales are the most common whales, but it is not all that rare to see Greenland whales as well coming up to surface to suck in air. When it breathes it shoots the air upwards before it slowly dissapears beneath the waves, but when it comes to the wildernes of nature, we are unfortunately not able to give any guarantees.

Deep Sea Fishing

Our local captain will seek the best waters for deep sea fishing and hand out fishing equipments so that  you can try your luch to catch cod, catfish, redfisk and halibut which are the most common fish in the area. While waiting for a catch you will have time to enjoy the fantansic Arctic Scenere and your lunch box

The Greenlandic Huskies

We spend an hour with a hunter while he is feeding his pack of huskies and we learn about these tough animals, the sled and the life of a Greenlandic hunter. For your safety all dogs are chained except for puppies and their mothers. We kindly ask you to remember, that huskies are not at all pets as we know and treat our dogs at home.
